Sirch Victor Edward William Somerset, 2nd Duke of York GBE KCB CMG MVO, originally Sirch Leftand-Halifax (born 27 December 2021), is a statesman, peer and politician who currently serves as the Secretary-General for the British Workers' Party, Deputy Editor for The Times and Professor of Law and History at Cambridge Universtiy.

He is also a founding trustee of the Heritage Preservation Institute which strives to record all Imperial information for future generation. A former Prime Minister of Great Britain who has served in three of the four Great Offices of State, the Marquess of Lorne is one of the regions most experienced politicians, but is officially retired from politics. He does, however, continue to assist governments in individual projects he deems to be in his realm of expertise or of personal interest.

Sirch Leftand-Halifax joined the Empire on the 27th of December 2021 and quickly became a prominent member of the community; he quickly joined the British Workers' Party and served under Kalara Sherwood-Somerset in the SDLP-BWP Coalition as a young and talented first Deputy, then Home Secretary, as well as becoming a the Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre.

Following Kalara Somerset's term, he was quickly appointed Deputy Prime Minister by veteran politician (and one day his father) Victor "Vig" Somerset, then Earl of Pembroke. This was the first record he broke, with many more to follow, becoming Deputy Prime Minister in a record time. In the following 18th Session of Parliament, Sirch - by that time adopted into the Sherwood-Somerset family - became the 15th Prime Minister of the region, and the youngest PM of the region in its history. He continues to hold this record. He was succeeded by one of his mentors, The Earl of Northumberland, but upon their sudden resignation Sirch was appointed as First Secretary of State, by the new Prime Minister, Charles Somerset. However due to complications with the Prime Minister and his subsequent ban from the region, Sirch stood in as an Interim PM until a General Election was called just a week later.

Despite his long list of talents and growing political expertise, Sirch - now a member of the peerage as the Viscount Halifax and Baron Hastings - would never serve as PM again. However, he would serve as Home Secretary, and First Secretary of State throughout several future Premierships, notably during all 3 Premierships of the Baroness Lomond, in which he took the difficult decision to merge the BWP with its main competitor, the Imperial Labour Party.

Following the end of the BWP and its successor, the BFL, Sirch, now the Earl of Beaufort, joined the British Constitutionalist Party. With its enigmatic figurehead in the former monarch, Elizabeth Howard-Campbell, 1st Duchess of Edinburgh, and Beaufort, were thrust back into the political spotlight. Upon the resignation of the Foreign Secretary, The Earl of Stirling, Sirch would replace him as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. His later cabinet achievements are most closely linked to his time in the Foreign Office under Howard-Campbell, Lleyton, and then the 2nd Viscount Douglas. He retired from front-line politics following the dissolution of the first Douglas Ministry in January 2024, but remained in Government. He then served as a Minister within the Foreign Office since January 2024, and under the Premiership of the Baron Knightstone, has returned to his familiar position of a Special Advisor to the Prime Minister.

He then retired from office due to serious health issues, and planned a trip to South America in order to recuperate. On the 2nd of September 2024, the Duke of York commenced his journey to South America, before returning back to the Empire 1 month later. His trip has been described as an almost unbelievable journey, beset with violence, death, treasures and heartbreak.

A former member of the Sherwood-Somerset Family, upon it's dissolution he parted ways with the Royal Family, before later being adopted by his BWP mentor and hero, Victor Somerset, becoming his first child. Via this he is a member of the Royal House of Somerset.

Early Life & Education

Sirch Leftand Halifax was born on the 27th December 2021 . He was educated at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, a school with a rich tradition of educating members of the Royal Family: his father, Uncle and Grandfather all attended the school. He later studied at Balliol College, Oxford.

Early Political Career

The British Workers Party

Once graduated from Balliol College, Sirch quickly joined the British Workers' Party, the primary party that dominated electoral politics at the time. At this point, the Party was seen as a centrist big-tent party, due to it's domination of Imperial politics.

Premiership of the Duchess of Manitoba

The previous Home Secretary had resigned due to certain issues and the position was open in as an interim role. The young Sirch quickly siezed the oppurtuity presented to him and applied for the position, easily passing the interview process. He was originally appointed Deputy Home Secretary, but after seeing his promise, the Duchess of Manitoba (soon to be his mother) quickly appointed him as interim Home Secretary.

Premiership of the Marquess of Grey

Having been impressed by his service in the Manitoba administration, the Prince Victor, 1st Duke of York (his future father), appointed him as Deputy Prime Minister during his administration. This was seen as a politically dangerous move due to the lack of experience Sirch had at this time. However, it turned out to be a savvy choice, with the role of Deputy Prime Minister taking on a more active position within government. The Premiership was also seen as a sucessful one, paving the way for BWP dominance over the next few elections.

Prime Minister (April 2022 - June 2022)

April 2022 General Election

Sirch Somerset secured a majority BWP election victory over the Commonwealth Non-Aligned Alliance (led by Charles Wright). His Address in Reply was one of the most gruelling seen in the region's history, questions and comments from all sides discussing his age and suitability, activity levels, and perceived miscommunication regarding Cabinet cooperation between the BWP and the CNA. In the middle of the Address-in-reply, due to IRL issues since he was travelling, Sirch arranged for CNA members to be part of his cabinet for the sake of Regional stability, even at the cost of upsetting his own party members. He passed the Address-in-reply with 11 Contents and 1 Abstention. The AiR continues to hold the record for longest ever, in the region.

Premiership

Overall, Sirch's Premiership was deemed to be a quiet one. Many policies remained unchanged from his Predecessors, Victor Somerset. Any changes that occurred were seen as a development of already implemented BWP projects. This unwillingness to change policies indicated a change from the more radical junior Minister, to the Leader of the Conservative faction within the BWP.

Key Policies

The Duke of York also created the position of Junior Minister, the idea being that it would encourage new members to take up positions and receive the experience needed to advance up the echelons in the Imperial Government. Governmental reform is a key passion for the Marquess and he has authored no less than 4 reforms of the government of which 3 have been implemented.

Foreign Office Success

In collaboration with his visionary Culture Secretary, Ori Veralius—a future Prime Minister—Sirch Victor Edward William Somerset spearheaded an ambitious cultural festival that sought to rejuvenate ties with Kantrias, TGN, and India, regions that had, drifted away from our sphere of influence due to the isolationist tendencies of the Somerset and Sherwood Premierships that had come before. This festival was not merely a celebration of arts and traditions; but rather a strategic initiative aimed at rekindling relationships and fostering mutual understanding among allies, setting a tone of cooperation in an increasingly fragmented geopolitical landscape.

Recognizing the significant gaps in foreign affairs due to the previous administrations' "Empire First" policies, Sirch enlisted the expertise of veteran diplomat Andrew Wright. Together, they embarked on a comprehensive assessment of the nation’s diplomatic standing. Wright’s meticulous efforts led to the creation of an exhaustive registry detailing all diplomats and allied regions. This registry not only streamlined communication but also illuminated the complexities of international relationships, empowering the government to make informed decisions and re-establish its presence on the global stage.

The initiative marked a pivotal turning point in Sirch's leadership, reflecting a commitment to proactive engagement and a departure from the stagnant diplomatic practices of his predecessors. By fostering cultural exchange and diplomatic clarity, Sirch laid the groundwork for a more interconnected and collaborative international community, reshaping the nation’s foreign policy approach for years to come.

Departure

On the 27th of June 2022, Sirch resigned the Premiership and called an election, with there being only a week left of his term. He left with a 67% approval rating.

Legacy

Sirch's Premiership was marked by the use of his weekly update where he provided both news about the region (which caused some issues with how these updates should be used) and general government announcements and explanations on projects. Sirch's term was also important thanks to his collaboration with Charles Wright (then Somerset) on the economy. It had lain dormant for several years and with a great effort, it was revived. This created the basis of the system we see today, with the estates system being one of the most important legislative pieces. Since the end of his term, serveral experts have rated his Premiership as adequate through to good. Many agree that the work put into reintroducing the economy, in collaboration with Charles Wright (then Somerset) was invaluable, but his conservative tendencies have been widely criticised.

Early post-Premiership Career (June 2022 - March 2023)

Northumberland & Interim Premiership

James Forsyte, the Earl of Northumberland and a former PM in his own right, took over from Sirch as PM after another electoral success from the BWP. However, he would resign just 14 days into his Premiership, due to health concerns. There were several suitable candidates to replace him as Prime Minister, and Northumberland expressed his support for Charles Somerset, who was duly appointed as Prime Minister. Sirch was appointed First Secretary of State for the Premiership.

The Huntingdon Premiership was fraught with political infighting and the PM's personal problems and vices, resulting in his sudden resignation due to an imminent ban from the region he was set to receive. As a result, Sirch took over as an emergency interim Prime Minister to arrange Government and get the BWP through to the next election, all while on holiday and instructing Government from his mobile phone. The term as a whole was dissolved early, but the BWP still returned an electoral majority in the subsequent election.

Interim Premiership debate

Due to the messiness of the previous goverments, this second Premiership was never actually recorded officially. No kissing of hands took place, as the government was in crisis. As such, the Duke of York is the only Prime Minister to have a debated premiership.

Veralius Premiership

Sirch served as Home Secretary during the Premiership of James Sherwood, 1st Baron Summerside (known as Joshua Veralius during his time as PM). He was seen as a reliable and strong pair of hands, especially in the very inactive government of the Summerside Premiership.

BWP and the British Federation of Labour

Imperial Labour Party

In response to the perceived decline of the BWP and it's increased right-ward shift under the Premierships of James Sherwood, Charles Wright and Sirch Somerset, many left wing members of the region formed the ILP. Prominent among those in the new party was their Leader, Lady Balloch, an ex-Prime Minister and veteran politician who had come out of retirement recently. This strongly reduced the electoral capability of the BWP, as it now had to compete for it's working class base, with the ILP. It's dominance, first hurt by the emergence of the CNA, was now damaged beyond repair by the emergence the ILP.

Merger

Sensing that the BWP would be relegated to obscurity if radical change did not occur, Sirch Somerset, then Chairman of the party, entered into negotiation talks with the ILP. Originally, the goal was to form an electoral alliance, but the talks slowly became about a potential merger. Eventually, after 2 weeks of negotiation, both parties dissolved and the new British Federation of Labour was formed.

Premiership of the Baroness Lomond

Upon the election victory of the BFL, Sirch became Deputy Prime Minister under Prime Minister Lomond. He focused specifically on Governmental reform culminating on Executive order 29 being published that established a stronger and more effecient government. The Premiership was seen as relatively successful, though, it was plauged by a rather ill Prime Minister who struggled to fullfil her duties with the vigour necessary.

Late post-Premiership Career (March 2023 - November 2023)

Political Wilderness

Towards the end of the Premiership of the Baroness Lomond, it became clear to the senior leadership whithin the BFL, that the party would not survive another general election. Internal infighting between its factions had made the party drop in the polls. As such, it was decided that the party would be dissolved, in order to avoid potential electoral embarrassment.

British Constitutionalist Party

Soon after the termination of the BFL, Sirch participated in formation of the BCP, a new-centre right to centrist party. This demonstrated the evolution his ideological stance went through during this period of political wilderness. He formed a strong working relationship with the leader of the party, the Duchess of Edinburgh and was widely seen as her heir in waiting, should she retire from frontline politics.

Premiership of the Duchess of Edinburgh

Upon the win of the BCP in the General election, Sirch was appointed to 2 positions. Firstly as Minister of State in the Home Office in order to assist the newly appoint Home Secretary. This was done as the newly appointed Home Secretary was inexperienced and needed assitance.

Additionally he was appointed as Minister of State at the Cabinet Office in order to pursue his love of governmental reform that he had commenced under the Premiership of the Baroness Lomond. As Minister of State to the Cabinet Office he comprehensively reformed the government into a modern and sleek institution. Once he had completed the reformation of government, he resigned as Minister of State to the Cabinet Office to focus on the Home Office.

On Monday, the 5th June 2023, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, August Carew, The Baron Calder was asked to hand in his resignation due to a severe breach of the ministerial code. In his place, Sirch was appointed due to his wealth of governmental affairs and connections he had formed with other regions in his now long career. He served in that role until the end of the term.

3rd Premiership of Cameron Romefeller:

Upon the election victory of Cameron Romfeller (their 3rd victory), Sirch was appointed as First Secretary of State. This position, thanks to the reforms Sirch had spearheaded, now lead a completely new office aptly named the Cabinet Office. However his tenure as First Secretary of State was to be a short one and swiftly after his appointment he resigned as FSoS due to health issues. However, in order to keep his experience in government, Kathrine Grey, The Countess of Argyll appointed him as Secretary of State for Media.

This position, which in reality had no actual responsiblity, allowed Sirch to continue to serve in the Cabinet, albiet in a less arduous role.

Premiership of the Earl of Stirling

Sirch was appointed as the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs during the Premiership of the Earl of Stirling, the same Foreign Secretary he had replaced in the Edinburgh Ministry. He steadied the ship following the slump seen during the end of the BCP and was a committed, reliable member of Cabinet.

Douglas and Knightstone Premierships & Semi-Retirement

Premiership of the Viscount Douglas

First Douglas Ministry

As a result of his work in the Foreign Office for Douglas' predecessor, Sirch was appointed Foreign Secretary once again. It was he who began talks with the region of Talonia - an ultimately successful endeavour resulting in the signing of the Treaty of Osborne in April 2024. However, real life commitments and a more hectic IRL schedule meant that he suddenly resigned on New Years Day of 2024. It seemed as if a suitable successor would have to be chosen but ultimately none came: the sudden implosion of the Liberal Democrats following The Duke of Warwick Affair meant that Lord Douglas was elected for a second successive term on the 5th January.

Second Douglas Ministry

Sirch was appointed as a Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, allowing him to remain in post in the Foreign Office as a mentor and deputy for the incoming Foreign Secretary, the then Thomas Carew. As Deputy he assisted Thomas Carew in his new role as Foreign Secretary and important and demanding position. He also remained a trusted advisor of the Prime Minister, but stated that for the moment, he had no intention of returning to a high cabinet position, allowing him to focus on other endeavours.

British Liberal Party

During this period, Sirch's politics increasingly shifted further and further to left, as it had been when he had first entered the world of politics. As such, he founded the British Liberal Party during this time, with the help of Miann Somerset. The Party was founded with elements of the old British Federation of Labour, and a merger of the British Renewal Party and the British Constitutionalist & Unionist Party. However, as the political centre of the Empire (at this time) was very much to the right, the party ended up positioning itself on the Centre to Centre-Right of the political specturum, with Sirch very much on its progressive wing.

Premiership of the Baron Knightstone

First Knightstone Ministry

Carew was thusly elected as the next Prime Minister in March 2024, and Sirch was appointed as one of three Special Advisors to the PM, to offer legislative and executive advice, alongside the Deputy Prime Minister. He was also retained in the Foreign Office as a Junior Minister to, in part, see out the ambitious Frontier Status agenda of the BLP, Carew's coalition partners, but this ultimately did not materialise. As a member of the BLP he was confirmed to a cabinet position because of the Concorde Coalition and its agreement, but the coalition was dissolved on the 22nd April 2024. This came about due to disagreements between the Chairs of the two parties (William Somerset, 2nd Viscount Douglas for the Herons, and Josephine Carew-Grey, Baroness Knightstone for the Liberals), which meant that renegotiation or continuation was untenable.#

Sirch, already ideologically different than the majority of the members of the party, and in a valiant display of political will immediately resigned from the BLP in protest.

Second Knightstone Ministry

Carew was re-elected to a second term under his new Party the Unionists. Having joined the Labour Party (Elio Somerset), after his departure from the Liberals, he hesitated upon joining the Second Knightsone Ministry. However, through personal admiration and loyalty to Thomas Carew, The Viscount Sidmouth, he joined his governmnet.

Whilst the Sirch remained a part of the opposition Labour Party, he continued to serve and advise the Prime Minister in the official roles he had held last term. However with the death of Lord Elio Somerset, Sirch departed the Labour Party and joined the Unionists, with the membership number of 007. After that Lord Lorne was lightly involved in government, advising on matters in the Prime Minister's Office and in the Foreign Office.

He has been seen, during this period, as an eminence gris.

Revival of the British Workers Party

Upon the end of the second Knightstone Premiership, the Duke of York took an extended retirement, mostly tending to the newly refounded British Workers' Party. Upon the return of Charles Wright from his position as Imperial Ambassador to the Netherlands, the work to bring back the BWP restarted in earnest with the party holding 1 seat in the House of Commons.

Trip to South America

Following several health scares, the Duke of York embarked upon a trip to South America in order to recuperate. His journals show that he spent the majority of his time resting and healing from his illness. Upon his return, Sirch returned to work on the reform of the BWP.

November 2024 General Election

In the November 2024 election, the BWP put forth one candidate, two time Prime Minister and veteran statesman Charles Wright, The Baron Huntingdon. The BWP also had an alliance with the Labour Party a newly founded leftist party. This alliance was named the Rose and Cickle Coalition. However, defying all polling, the Conservative and Unionist Coalition smashed the leftwing alliance, leading to the formation of Third Premiership of the Duke of Somerset. The BWP was left with zero represenatation in the House of Commons, leading to uncertainity about it's future.

The Heritage Preservation Institute

The Heritage Preservation Institute is a non-profit organization established on October 26, 2024 foudned by the Sirch in collaboration with the Viscount Sidmouth, and the Charles Wright, The Baron Huntingdon. Headquartered on St. James Street in London, the Institute is dedicated to heritage preservation through systematic record-keeping at the Library of Parliament Hill.

Cambridge University

On the 24/10/2024, Sirch was appointed Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of Law by Chancellor of Cambridge Universtiy William Somerset, The Earl of Durham. He subsequently became Professor of History upon the foundation of that department on the 08/12/2024. He is renowned for his harsh marking.

Merger of the Labour and British Workers' Party

On the 8th of December, 2024, after long and arduous talks with the Labour Party Sirch (in his capacity as General Secretary) and Charles Wright (in his capacity as Chairman) agreed to merge with the Labour Party (Anastasia Nelson foundation). As part of the deal, the following had to occur:

  1. A new charter must be adopted.
  2. Noa de Cateret was to become the Party Designate for Prime Minister.

This was agreed and the two parties merged on the 8th of December 2024. Reform of the party soon followed and culminated on the 11th of December after several days of talks. After changes to the party's founding charter, party leadership looked like the following:

  1. A Party Leader was to be in charge and be the Party's PM designate at General Elections.
  2. The positon of General Secretary was to be split in two, having previously served as both the Chief Admin and the individual repsonsible for internal elections.
    1. The first new positon was named Chairman. It is in charge of internal election and is chair of the NEC. It is elected, similarly to the Party Leader, whenever a General Election is called.
    2. The position of Chief Admin was seperated from the old General Secretary position. It was replaced by a new position, also named General Secretary, solely responsible for administrative matters.

Personal Life

Sirch was the first son of the former King, Edward IX, and then Duke of York; Prince Victor was one of Sirch's mentors and a source of guidance during his time in the BWP and his early time within the empire. Following the death of his father in November 2024, Sirch's direct family is now his grandfather Matthew Somerset, The Duke of Somerset and John, Prince of Wales, his great grandfather. As a result, he is the brother of the Elio Somerset, 1st Viscount Salisbury, and nephew of Charles III (alongside his husband Prince Miann, Duke of Edinburgh) and Cameron Somerset, 1st Countess of Argyll. Elio and Cameron Somerset are now deceased.

Sirch was married to Firentia Somerset-Howard-Campbell, 1st Countess of Clare during 2023, until her death - during this time he was the son-in-law of the formidable Prime Minister and former Monarch, Elizabeth Howard-Campbell, 1st Duchess of Edinburgh.

Residences

The Duke of York, as a high-profile member of the Royal Family, has a small apartment at Kensington Palace, as well as the claim to a further apartment at Hampton Court Palace, though due to the public nature of the latter, no current members of the Royal Family have accepted the offer of an apartment there.

His primary residence is Beaumont Manor, a small country home on the Isle of Sark, part of the Channel Islands. He also owns Clare Cottage, in the village (and capital of Sark) La Seigneurie.
