Elizabeth Howard-Campbell, 1st Duchess of Edinburgh's tenure as Prime Minister of Great Britain began on 24 May 2023 when she accepted an invitation from King Edward IX to form a government and passed the Address in Reply, succeeding Matthew Somerset, 1st Duke of Somerset. She is the second woman to hold the Office of Prime Minister (after Serafina Sherwood, 1st Duchess of Manitoba) and the third Prime Minister of King Edward IX. In addition to being Prime Minister, she serves as First Lord of the Treasury.
On 17 May 2023, Elizabeth Howard-Campbell was elected as Leader of the British Constitutionalist Party [1] and led the party to victory in the May 2023 General Election achieving a supermajority of 5 seats and 68.75% of the vote [2]. She was subsequently summoned to Buckingham Palace by King Edward IX and invited to form a Government in his name [3]. The next day, on 23 May 2023, the Joint Session of the 26th Session of Parliament convened in Westminster Hall for the Address in Reply [4]. She achieved the confidence of Parliament in a 7-0-5 vote [5].
In the lead-up to the next General Election, Howard-Campbell continued in her role as Leader of her party. On 27 June 2023, the Party announced that it had completed its Midterm Conference and that The Duchess of Edinburgh would lead them once more [6]. On 4 July 2023, the Midterm Poll was released by the British Broadcasting Corporation [7]. These results indicated that support has lessened, but still showed much larger support than that of the Opposition. However, due to real-life concerns, she announced her decision to no longer contest the premiership. [8]
Her premiership has been defined by developments in Foreign Affairs, complete economic reform, and the most active Session of Parliament in regional history, as well as several scandals which lessened popular support.
